INFERTILITY

Infertility is defined as the condition where a female has not conceived even after 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse with the partner. Over the ages infertility has been a stigma in the society and the burden of the same is put on the female most of the time. This is not right, infertility can be due to female as well as male partner. In fact 33% of infertility cases seen at Matritva Clinic in Greater Noida by Dr Radha Agartaniya has the male infertility as the reason for not able conceive. Infertility can be either primary or secondary. Primary infertility is when a couple has not been able to conceive even once. Secondary infertilty is when a couple has conceived but is not able to conceive again. Infertilty whether male or female needs treatment of underlying cause. In males excessive alcohol intake, obesity, diabetes, drug abuse, smoking etc are the factors that can affect both sperm count and sperm motility.

CAUSES & SOLUTION

Female infertility can be due to hormonal problem or because of the growth in uterus or ovarian cyst. However, the most common is blockage in the fallopian tubes and PCOD. Inorder to treat the infertility is to check the patency of the fallopian tubes which is done through either a HSG test or a hysteroscopy. PCOD is another very common problem that leads to female infertility and needs medical management as well as lifestyle modification. However if the infertility is due to ovarian cyst or fibroid then the surgery for the same is the best option. There are many cases of primary infertility where Dr Radha advises to go for IUI or IVF.

IUI (Intra Uterine Insemination) - In this procedure the healthy and concentrated sperm from the male is placed directly into the uterus at an appropriate time of ovulation for the female.

IVF (In - Verto Fertilization) - In this procedure the eggs from the female and sperm from the male are taken and fertilized outside the body. If the quality of the egg or the sperm is not good then they can be taken from donors. The fertilized egg is then placed into the uterus of the female.
